Cambodian border casino fire kills & injures dozens
Cambodian incident – A fire at a casino complex in Poipet, Cambodia, a border resort town with numerous players from Thailand, where casino gambling is outlawed, killed at least 19 people and injured scores.
The Cambodian authorities reported the Grand Diamond City casino hotel fire started at 11.30pm local time on Wednesday (December 28). The fire harmed 70 persons. Local officials and the media disagree on the number of injured.
Police estimated 400 workers were at the site when the fire started. Due to unaccounted-for victims, local authorities feared the death toll to grow.
Rescuers pulled tourists from a blazing ledge in internet footage. Reports said Thai and Cambodian rescuers worked together to put out the fire.
The complex’s first level caught fire, spreading fast across the multistory edifice.
Poipet, a popular Thai vacation spot, has many casino hotels along the Cambodian border with Thailand. Casino gambling is illegal for Cambodians.
